SILVERADO SENIOR LIVING AND INTOUCH HEALTH AWARDED SILVER ABBY
CEOs Loren Shook and Yulun Wang, Ph.D. Voted Top Innovators at Sixth Annual Innovations in Healthcare Event and Awards Ceremony
Orange, CA, June 18, 2004 - Loren Shook, President and CEO of Silverado Senior Living, teamed with Yulun Wang, Ph.D., Chairman and CEO of InTouch Health, took home the Silver ABBY Award at Wednesday's Sixth Annual Innovations in HealthcareSM Event and Awards Ceremony, presented by the Adaptive Business Leaders (ABL) Organization, a membership organization for CEOs and Presidents of healthcare and technology firms.
Silverado, of San Juan Capistrano, and InTouch®, of Goleta, were honored with the Silver ABBY Award for jointly developing a new modality that overcomes geographic barriers, by enabling someone to be remotely present via a robot. In fact, Yulun Wang "attended" Wednesday's event from Japan, using the "Companion" robot via an Internet connection.
Utilizing this robot, clinical experts can monitor and assess a patient's situation, meet with other clinical staff and/or patients' families and provide consultation and clinical feedback for immediate care planning or intervention - without leaving their office. Operations experts can remotely meet with facility administrators and staff to provide assistance and training to immediately impact the positive operations of a facility. The InTouch "Care Stations" can be installed anywhere there is an Internet connection and are currently in use at Silverado's corporate and regional office, physicians' clinical offices and in families' homes.
"ABL's Innovations in Healthcare ABBY Award was established to honor companies which best exemplify innovative approaches to providing or enabling the timely delivery of quality, cost effective healthcare," noted ABL President Mimi Grant. "The InTouch 'Companion' robot clearly does that: as we saw how one of Silverado's highly skilled geriatricians, who are in very short supply, could make 'house calls' on patients located in facilities in multiple states on the same afternoon. This is the closest thing to 'beam me up, Scotty' in healthcare today." Loren Shook, President and CEO of Silverado Senior Living commented, "We are honored to have been recognized by the ABL Organization. Silverado will continue to look for innovations which enhance the quality of life for the people we serve, those suffering from memory impairments."
Approximately 120 attendees - executives and business leaders from healthcare, life science and venture capital industries - listened to presentations by the nine Abby Award nominees and then voted for the person/company they believed should receive the Innovation in Healthcare (ABBY) Awards. The nine Finalists were earlier selected by ABL's Technology Advisory Board from an array of organizations nominated for their innovative medical products, systems, processes and services.
Also receiving awards Wednesday was Leonard Schaeffer, Chairman and CEO of WellPoint, who received the first-ever "Leadership in Innovation" Award, and delivered a spirited address on "Leadership & Innovation." Other ABBY winners were George Carpenter, CEO of WorkWell Systems, Inc., of Aliso Viejo, who received the Platinum Award; and Dirk Soenksen, CEO of Aperio Technologies, Inc., of Vista, who took home the Gold.
The other Finalists were: William Huse, M.D., Ph.D., CEO, Applied Molecular Evolution of San Diego; Michael Perry, CEO, CardioDynamics, of San Diego; Michael Cho, CEO, DestinationRx, of Los Angeles; Abbe Land, Co-CEO, Los Angeles Free Clinic, of Los Angeles; Giovanni Colella, M.D., CEO, RelayHealth Corporation, of Emeryville; and Harry Soza, Founder, Resolution Health, of San Jose.
